Innovative Instruction
Winter program

Research indicates arts education will lead to stronger reading proficiency, increased math abilities, and higher general intelligence scores. The arts improve listening, benefit language development, and cultivate motor skills. We are focused on reaching our students by employing the arts to access what the children already inherently know.

We have formulated our curriculum around school-wide thematic units of study from the Gates Foundation. Our team of Arts Specialists (certified teachers in Visual Art, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music/Theatre, and Physical Education/Movement) works daily with grade level classrooms during their Reading, Writing, and/or Math periods. They focus on Essential Questions and Enduring Understandings. With this inquiry-based approach to learning, Perley students are able to express themselves through various art mediums and enhance their understanding of academic standards.

In addition to this, each class meets for “Arts Immersion” during the school day with an Arts Specialist on a two-day rotation. In these classes, the instructor is able to focus on teaching techniques and skills. Kindergarten students also receive this instruction time. The fact that we offer Instrumental Music classes in addition to Vocal/General Music is a distinction worth noting, as no other elementary schools in the area provide students the double dose of music instruction.
